It's a tight fit under that beam to reach the roof hatch!

Bits of what appears to be masonry rubble are stacked on the beam to the left.

Some of the long pegs used to secure the tenons are as finely finished as pieces of interior trim. They're quite smooth, not roughly carved as one might expect, and were made from nicely planed stock.
